Welcome to my blog. For my first post and first (ever) blog entry, I think it would be wise to introduce myself, who I am, and why Essence of Eating.
Why did i choose to become a Dietitian?
Food! The reason I chose to become a dietitian is simple. It is because I love food. Growing up, I found it fascinating how the body reacts to food as if it were medicine. So I thought why not study it!
I grew up for the most part in a small WA country town named Harvey, famous for Beef, Milk and Oranges. After finishing high school, I studied Nutrition as an undergraduate degree at Curtin University, followed by Dietetics as a Post-Graduate Diploma, also at Curtin University in Perth.
I have travelled to Japan to study their food culture; had the pleasure of educating primary school children in remote Aboriginal communities in the far North West of Australia on the value of good nutrition; and treated myself to once-in-a-lifetime dining experiences, such as Heston’s The Fat Duck in Bray, London. I enjoy everything about food so much that I decided to move with my partner to Melbourne from Perth a little over two years ago, and have enjoyed every moment. Melbourne’s status as Australia’s food capital (in my humble opinion) was one of the many reasons that prompted the decision to move here with my partner (also an avid footy fan, which contributed to the decision!). It was meant to be.
Practicing what I preach, I enjoy healthy home cooked meals during the week, experimenting with new recipes and new ingredients.
One of my favourite things to do on the weekend is enjoy a well-made coffee and a tasty breakfast at many of Melbourne’s fabulous unique cafes. This I enjoy doing as often as my wallet will allow.
Through my profession I am able to share my love of food with my patients. I am able to educate people to embrace food in the correct manner, with good health in mind. But most of all I receive great pleasure when I witness the continued positive health changes that my clients experience.
Why see a Dietitian?
The reasons to see a dietitian can be varied and complex. An underlying condition may trigger the requirement; ie. Diabetes, IBS. A dietary requirement due to allergy or intolerance may be the driving factor. A requirement due to a personal goal may be at play, such as muscle gain or weight loss.
Whatever the trigger for prompting a person to see a dietitian, there is a common thread: A requirement for better nutrition.
When you come to see a Dietitian, we will provide you with the tools required in order to achieve your dietary goals, backed by scientific research.
