It’s that time where many of us are looking towards getting a healthy start to the new year. It’s really important to stress that “being healthy” isn’t all about detoxing, fasting and running marathons. We all have to start somewhere to improve our health. Even the smallest actions are steps in the right direction.

Here are five ways to make a healthy start to 2017…
- Indulge, but in moderation. Going to an event that may involve a fair bit of indulging when it comes to food? No problem – have fun! Just enjoy lighter meals before or after the event so the amount you eat evens out across the day.
- Keep a large water bottle handy. Not only is it important to stay hydrated, particularly during our Australian summers, but thirst can often be mistaken for hunger and so you can end up eating when you’d actually feel just as content after a large glass of water!
- Get moving. Exercise is essential. Many of us lead sedentary lives sat at a computer and we need to move our bodies more. But make it fun: work out whether you like exercising in a solo or group situation and make it work for you. This could be going for a walk with a friend, joining a volleyball team or getting on your mat for some yoga.
- Schedule time to do things YOU want to do. It’s ok to say no to some things to allow more time for yourself. The year has just begun – avoid getting stuck in the rat race and burning out before the end of January.
- Keep up to date with servicing your health. Seek advice from an expert and make regular appointments with your doctor/dietitian/physio/psychologist as needed.
